FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - If you care for children and wondered if there was an easy way for them to determine on their own whether they’re drinking enough water, you’re in luck.

Researchers at the University of Arkansas said Tuesday that children ages 8-14 can accurately use an 8-point urine-color chart like those used by athletes and the military.

A study in the American Journal of Public Health said this month that half of American children aren’t adequately hydrated. The University of Arkansas researchers wanted to know whether children could assess themselves using the 8-color chart.

The study by Stavros Kavouras at the UA College of Education and Health Professions was published in the European Journal of Nutrition. The school said mild dehydration has been associated with poorer school performance in children.
