FISHERS, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana utility says it’ll convert a former limestone quarry into a reservoir to provide up to 25 million gallons of water per day in its eight-county service territory.

Citizens Energy Group announced Tuesday that the $20 million Citizens Reservoir opening in 2020 will capture water that’s now lost over Geist Dam during heavy rains.

The new reservoir’s capacity of 2.7 billion gallons will be more than 40 percent that of adjacent Geist Reservoir.

The utility says recent studies have found central Indiana will need an additional 50 million to 80 million gallons of water per day to meet growing demand over the next 25 years.

It’s unclear what impact if any Citizens Reservoir will have on the viability of the proposed Mounds Lake Reservoir between Anderson and Muncie.
