PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A former North Providence police chief convicted of stealing from a stripper was sentenced to serve six months in prison after the Rhode Island Supreme Court rejected his appeal.

John Whiting was convicted of larceny and criminal solicitation in 2012 after stealing $714 from Justina Cardona’s pocketbook.

Whiting gave the cash to another officer responding to the scene of an August 2011 automobile accident involving Cardona, a dancer at the Satin Doll in Providence.

Although the state’s sentencing benchmarks do not recommend prison time for first-time felony larceny offenders, Judge Daniel Procaccini said he wanted to make an example out of Whiting.

Arguments will be heard July 7 to determine if Whiting’s sentence deserves to be reduced due to mental stress and marital strife at the time of the incident.
