ATLANTA (AP) - A federal jury convicted an Atlanta area man on charges that he defrauded NASA and the National Science Foundation.

Federal prosecutors in Atlanta say Craig D. Near of Alpharetta and Genziko Inc. were convicted Friday on seven counts of wire fraud and two counts of filing false claims against the United States.

Federal prosecutors say Near submitted fraudulent grant and contract proposals through his company, Genziko, to a variety of federal agencies from June 2008 to June 2014 seeking funds for scientific research. Prosecutors say the proposals included false employees and managers, as well as fraudulent budgets.

Prosecutors say Near and Genziko received nearly $800,000 in federal research funds on three granted proposals and used the money almost entirely on personal expenses.

Near is set to be sentenced Sept. 1.
