NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) - The N.C. Department of Public Safety says an inmate at Craven Correctional Center is facing charges in connection with an assault on a detention officer.

Local media outlets report department spokesman Keith Acree says Rodney Abdul Farmer is charged with felony assault on a corrections officer. Acree said Farmer is being held without bond, and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

According to Acree, correctional officer Donald Ayers was punched in the face, and then fell backward and hit his head.

Ayers was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. Ayers has worked at the correctional center since 2003.
