PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he shot a 17-year-old girl last month.

The Record newspaper reports (https://bit.ly/1J1IW2x ) 25-year-old Luis Polanco pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and weapons charges in court Monday.

The Paterson man was arrested in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, a week after the May 30 shooting that seriously wounded a girl in Paterson. Authorities say the teen was shot in the back while sitting in the passenger seat of a car.

Polanco’s attorney, Harley Breite, says his client doesn’t know the victim.

Prosecutors declined to comment after the court hearing.

He’s being held at the Passaic County Jail on $750,000. The case is being referred to a grand jury.
