DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A man who leaped off a pedestrian bridge into the Des Moines River has been rescued.

Authorities were called just before 4 p.m. Monday and told that the man had jumped from the bridge south of Court Avenue in downtown Des Moines.

Fire Capt. Steve Brown says police officers threw a rope to the man, and then a rescue team used a boat to save him from drowning.

Brown says the man was suicidal when he jumped, but he began swimming once he was in the water.

The man was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
