PHOENIX (AP) - A Mesa man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for fatally beating his girlfriend with a baseball bat two years ago.

Jose Concepcion Gonzalez Esparza was sentenced Tuesday and was credited with 742 days already served while awaiting sentencing for second-degree murder.

Esparza pleaded guilty earlier this year to beating 45-year-old Maria Gomez to death with a baseball bat in the couple’s trailer in June 2013.

Court records show that on the day of the murder, Esparza called Gomez’s daughter and 911 to say that he found Gomez dead in their trailer.

But after he was questioned by police detectives, court documents show that Esparza admitted to the killing and blood on his shoes and clothes corroborated his confession.
