NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A veteran New Orleans police officer who fled from a Causeway Police Department officer and then tried to report his car as stolen has pleaded guilty and resigned.

The Advocate (https://bit.ly/1Fy3732 ) reports Gary J. Calico pleaded guilty Thursday to aggravated flight from an officer and aggravated obstruction of a highway. Authorities say Calico fled from police in December 2013 after officers saw him nearly strike a curb. Police chased him to his home, but he refused to come out when officers knocked at his door.

Police say Calico tried to report his car as stolen but later surrendered.

He was sentenced to a 2 1/2-year suspended sentence and five years of active probation.

Authorities say Calico served with the New Orleans Police Department for 22 years. He resigned last Wednesday.
