FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - A man considered a person of interest in the killings of his girlfriend and their 6-month-old son was detained when he apparently jumped into a lake at an Orange County park after crashing his car.

KABC-TV reports Kwame Carpenter came out of the water with his hands up early Tuesday at Mile Square Regional Park in Fountain Valley. The 24-year-old had just crashed his car into a minivan, injuring the driver.

Police in Anaheim began searching for Carpenter on Monday after officers responded to an assault in progress at an apartment complex. A woman in her 20s was found dead inside and a baby boy was hurt. The child later died at a hospital.

KABC reports Carpenter is the father of the boy.

He is being questioned by authorities.
