BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Power has been restored to most of the nearly 18,000 utility customers in western New York who lost electricity service when severe thunderstorms rolled across the region.

The storms early Tuesday morning brought heavy rain, lightning and winds gusting to more than 40 mph in some parts of the Buffalo-Niagara region. At the height of the storm, NYSEG and National Grid reported more than 17,900 customers without power.

The majority of those outages were in the West Seneca and Hamburg areas outside Buffalo.

About 6,000 homes and businesses remain without power Tuesday morning.
