RUFUS, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say a wrong-way driver died at the scene when his vehicle collided with a truck on Interstate 84 in Gilliam County.

According to Sgt. John Katzenstein, the Jeep Cherokee driven by 25-year-old Tyler Brown was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes late Monday.

State troopers got complaints and were starting to respond when the Hermiston man’s vehicle struck a Peterbilt truck head-on. Both vehicles were quickly engulfed in flames, but the truck driver escaped without injury.

Katzenstein says the truck was loaded with salmon, and it took hours for fire crews to extinguish the flames.

Both directions of I-84 just east of the John Day Dam were closed for almost four hours. Crews were still cleaning the highway late Tuesday morning.
