HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A Hilo-based tour company could be forced to pay more than $9,000 in fines for taking customers on unpermitted tours of the lava flow on the Big Island.

Hawaii News Now reports (https://bit.ly/1BLSBKW ) that Ahiu Hawaii Tours led people to lava flows over informal trails in areas that were closed, despite repeated warnings by officials that the tours were illegal.

The Department of Land and Natural Resources is requesting money to pay administrative and civil penalties and will discuss the fines at the board’s next meeting Friday.
