RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is giving out no-fee voter ID cards at all driver license offices statewide in advance of the 2016 elections.

So far, DMV had handed out 1,019 of the cards across the state.

Effective next year, state law will require voters in North Carolina to present valid photo identification to cast a ballot at the polls.

No-fee ID cards are available at all driver license locations for residents who have no other valid form of identification as described in House Bill 589. Applicants will need to present documents that verify their age and identity, their residency address in North Carolina and provide a valid Social Security number.

Document requirements for the card are available on the DMV website, https://www.ncdot.gov/dmv/driver/id/ .
