BOSTON (AP) - Authorities say a man swung a hammer at people and police, using it to smash cars and windows in Boston.

Police say the 52-year-old man swung the hammer and screamed at people who had gathered around him Sunday afternoon.

Police urged the man, who was bleeding from his head, to drop the hammer. Instead, police say he charged at them forcing them to take cover behind their cruisers. After smashing a store window a sergeant pointed a non-lethal shotgun at the man, who then dropped the weapon.

He was taken to a Boston hospital for treatment.

He pleaded not guilty in South Boston Municipal Court to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and willful malicious destruction of property. He’s due back in court July 22.
