AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine officials are closing the application period for grant proposals to create improved recreational boating access in the state.

The grants are limited to a $150,000 maximum each and proposals are due Wednesday. State officials say the state wants to increase access to the state’s ponds, lakes, rivers, streams and coastline. Maine has 500 public recreational boat access sites.

Maine officials say qualifying projects must be finished by June 30, 2017. Officials say money for the projects would come from the state’s fiscal 2016 budget. A cash or in-kind match equal to half the approved project cost is also required.
