BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A candlelight vigil is set at the University of Alabama-Birmingham for victims of the church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

Officials say the vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday outside the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts. Organizers say nine UAB students will stand for the victims and each will light a candle in their honor.

On June 17, 21-year-old Dylann Roof attended a Bible study program at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church before fatally shooting nine members including the church’s pastor. Roof said he targeted the victims because they were black.

Organizers say Director of UAB’s African American Studies program Kathryn Morgan and the Rev. Mashod Evans of the Birmingham St. John’s African Methodist Episcopal Church are expected to speak during the vigil.
