PAINESVILLE, Ohio (AP) - A judge has found a northeast Ohio woman not guilty by reason of insanity in the fatal stabbing of her 86-year-old mother last year.

The (Willoughby) News-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1LAw6Ze ) Lake County Common Pleas Judge Vincent Culotta found that 56-year-old Dawn Pierce didn’t know right from wrong when she killed Lillian Pierce.

The verdict came after a nonjury trial Tuesday.

Prosecutors say the Mentor (MEN’-tur) woman stabbed her mother dozens of times before killing her cat in September.

Richard Perez, Dawn Pierce’s attorney, says his client loved her mother and her cat, but suffered from a mental illness for more than 20 years.

Prosecutors said the mental illness is genuine.

She’s being held in jail pending a court hearing to determine whether she’ll be hospitalized by a court order.
