BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Authorities arrested a Baton Rouge fire captain on charges that he raped a child in Tennessee.

Multiple news outlets report 56-year-old Roman Bates was arrested Tuesday.

Authorities say Bates has worked for the Baton Rouge Fire Department since 1990.

Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says Bates failed to show up for work on at least one day and was already facing disciplinary proceedings for being absent without leave. He was wanted as a fugitive out of Shelby County, Tennessee, on charges of rape of a child, sexual battery, aggravated sexual battery, and aggravated statutory rape.

Authorities say Bates was booked into the Orleans Parish Prison and is awaiting extradition. Court records showed Bates has waived extradition proceedings. It is unclear if he has a lawyer.
