MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey man who was driving drunk when he caused an accident that killed three relatives two years ago has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Luis Torres was driving home from a birthday-party barbecue when his sport utility vehicle overturned on Route 15 in Jefferson Township in August 2013.

Killed in the crash were Torres’ mother-in-law, his 11-year-old stepdaughter and a niece who was five months pregnant. Six other people were injured but later recovered.

The 39-year-old Torres pleaded guilty March 23 to aggravated manslaughter, two counts of vehicular homicide, assault by auto and driving while intoxicated.

He has to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he becomes eligible for parole. He will also lose his license for 10 years after he gets out of prison.
