DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - A family of ducks appears to be sprouting up from a downtown Dubuque concrete planter.

The Telegraph Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1HktKhx ) that a mallard has laid 12 eggs under a tree in a planter on West Eighth Street.

Kimberly Luedtke with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says city employees recently notified her of the nesting duck. She and Dubuque County Conservation staff put up an orange safety fence around the planter to warn passers-by to steer clear.

Brian Preston, executive director of the Dubuque County Conservation Board, says ducks often will nest away from water to avoid predators.

Luedtke says once the eggs hatch, workers will help take the mother and ducklings to a water source.
