DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - Search crews are looking for a 20-year-old man who went missing after he jumped into the Animas River north of Durango.

The Durango Herald reports (https://goo.gl/6GygSy ) the man, whose name has not been released, was walking along the river when he took his shirt off and jumped in Thursday evening near Tank Creek. His friends ran alongside him as long as they could, but they couldn’t help him because of the swift current.

Staff at a nearby resort reported seeing the man floating face-down and unresponsive, but they were unable to retrieve him.

Butch Knowlton, director of the La Plata County Office of Emergency Management, says search crews are focusing their efforts on the extremely narrow, steep canyon areas where the river passes through.
