ROY, Utah (AP) - The parents of a Utah man suspected of killing his family and then himself say they’re in shock and don’t understand what happened because their son loved his family and life.

Larry and Joanne Smith released a statement through Roy city police Friday about the apparent murder-suicide on Father’s Day.

Police say 29-year-old Russell Smith shot and killed his wife and two young children before turning the gun on himself Sunday at their home in Roy, about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City.

A relative discovered Smith’s body, along with those of 26-year-old Shawna Smith, 6-year-old daughter Tylee and 2-year-old son Blake, that night.

The Standard-Examiner newspaper of Ogden reports (https://bit.ly/1eMTKrr ) the Smiths announced a joint funeral for the family of four will be held in Layton Saturday morning.
