SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Investigators say a male suspect fleeing from San Antonio police was shot dead near a high school after he reached for a gun he dropped while fleeing from officers.

The incident happened about 1:30 p.m. Friday at a body repair shop across the street from John Jay High school in far western San Antonio.

Police Chief Anthony Trevino (treh-VEEN’-yoh) says an officer was making a routine traffic stop when the driver bolted and fled on foot. With the officer in pursuit, the suspect scaled an 8-foot fence but dropped a gun in the process. Despite the officer’s orders not to, the suspect reached for the weapon. The officer fired three shots, hitting the man in the hand and chest.

No teachers or students were in the school at the time.
