WETUMPKA, Ala. (AP) - Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin has confirmed a Wetumpka High School student drowned in Lake Jordan.

WSFA-TV (https://bit.ly/1djSTg5 ) reports 15-year-old Tavontae Austin had been jumping off the pier with friends at Bonner’s Point near Slapout Thursday evening when he became distressed and witnesses said he panicked. People in the area attempted to assist him but were unsuccessful.

Divers from the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and with the help of Alabama Marine Police they were able to locate the teen’s body.

This is the second drowning at Lake Jordan in just over a month. On May 24, 23-year-old Carlton Wade Corbett of Wetumpka drowned near New Harmony Road and Geddie Loop in the Slapout area.
