HAINES, Alaska (AP) - Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation officials say water from the Haines Borough public water system have tested positive for E. coli.

The Alaska Dispatch News reports (https://bit.ly/1KgBIL6 ) that residents in the southeast Alaska community who use the public water system have been placed on a boil-water notice. Any water intended for cooking or consumption must be boiled for two minutes.

One out of two standard bacterial tests collected earlier this week tested positive for the bacteria.

The notice says E. coli in the water is a sign the water could be contaminated by human or animal waste. The bacteria can cause a variety of ailments, including severe abdominal cramps, diarrhea, or headaches.

DEC’s Drinking Water Program manager Cindy Christian says about 1,500 people use the Haines Borough public water system.
