DETROIT (AP) - A police officer seen on video repeatedly punching a motorist in the head during a suburban Detroit traffic stop is scheduled for trial this fall.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says court dates were set on Friday for William Melendez, who is charged with assault. He denies wrongdoing and remains free on bond.

A court conference will take place Aug. 14 and the trial date is Oct. 5.

A judge earlier sent the case to trial after watching the video in her office and listening to the testimony of Floyd Dent, the 57-year-old man who was pummeled.

Melendez was fired as an Inkster officer. A $1.4 million settlement has been reached between Dent and the city.
