INDIANA, Pa. (AP) - A hearing is scheduled in August to determine whether a western Pennsylvania man is competent to stand trial in the bludgeoning death of his mother, a retired Indiana University of Pennsylvania professor.

Thirty-six-year-old Todd Walters is charged in Indiana County in the death of 72-year-old Ruth Shirey, a longtime geography professor found unconscious in her home Feb. 20.

Defense attorney Leonard Ambrose III said he will argue at the Aug. 13 hearing that his client is not competent to proceed without further medical treatment.

Police said in a criminal complaint that they were told by a relative that Walters had been treated for mental health issues and had not been taking his prescribed medications.

Walters is charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault and is being held without bail.
