FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - The former chief of medicine at Stafford Hospital has been sentenced to four years in federal prison.

The Free Lance-Start reports (https://bit.ly/1GR7MBp ) that Nibedita Mohanty issued unnecessary prescriptions for oxycodone and other drugs.

Mohanty had practiced medicine in Stafford for 20 years.

She was convicted of two counts of illegally distributing drugs and one count of health care fraud. Numerous other charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

She was also fined $15,000 and ordered to pay a forfeiture of cash proceeds of more than $43,000.

Mohanty was the chief of medicine at Stafford Hospital from 2009 to 2013. She was initially arrested in March 2013, following a lengthy investigation by the Stafford Sheriff’s Office.
