HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gunfire broke out during a basketball tournament near a Connecticut elementary school, leaving four people hurt, including one in critical condition.

Deputy Chief Brian Foley tells the Hartford Courant (https://cour.at/1No1RW3 ) the shooting happened at the Rawson School’s basketball court in Hartford around 4:30 p.m. Saturday while the tournament was underway. Foley says three people suffered injuries that weren’t life threatening.

Mayor Pedro Segarra says called the shooting “absolutely unacceptable” and areas near schools should be “free, open and safe places for our children and community.” He described the neighborhood as stable.

Foley says it’s unclear how many shots were fired, who the shooters were or if the victims were in the tournament or spectators.

Police are interviewing witnesses and ask that anyone with video of the event contact them.
