COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A 78-year-old Florida man is dead after he tried to cross a South Carolina interstate on foot to check on people inside a vehicle involved in an earlier collision.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Sunday John Herman Phelps of Fort Myers, Florida, died when he was run down by a vehicle heading north on Interstate 77 about 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says Phelps was hit by a tractor-trailer traveling in the highway’s middle lane after he walked into the roadway.

Troopers continue to investigate the incident.

Traffic in the area was rerouted for several hours Saturday night.
