AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The Maine Marine Patrol is on heightened alert for boaters who violate the state’s boating under the influence laws.

The special focus on boating under the influence is part of the national Operation Dry Water effort taking place this weekend. Maine Marine Patrol Maj. Rene Cloutier says officers will be conducting patrols from Kittery to the Canadian border looking for boaters who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Operation Dry Water is a campaign coordinated by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. The group says alcohol was the primary factor in nearly a quarter of boater deaths last year.
