SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Magna man has been sentenced to life without parole for his role in a 2013 kidnapping and execution-style killing of a man near a Weber County ski resort.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1TVAEiH ) that 3rd District Judge Randall Skanchy sentenced Viliamu Seumanu to the term requested by prosecutors and the victim’s family despite the man’s insistence that he is innocent.

Seumanu’s attorney says he will file an appeal. Prosecutors say Seumanu was not the triggerman in the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Cleat Knight but believe he helped carry out the crime.

Seumanu apologized to Knight’s family before receiving his sentence, saying he had made bad choices.

Prosecutors argued that the punishment is appropriate. Deputy District Attorney Vincent Meister said Knight’s murder is one of the most brutal he’s seen.
