AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage says he has nothing to do with the robocalls attacking Republican senators for a state budget deal they crafted with Democrats.

In automated telephone messages, his daughter, Lauren LePage, says GOP senators are “working behind the scenes with liberal Democrats” to oppose LePage’s proposed income tax cuts. Instead, they’re supporting “taxpayer-funded welfare for illegal aliens.”

LePage said Thursday that he’s proud of his daughter, and that she acted on her own.

He also reiterated that if state lawmakers don’t adopt his income tax cuts, then he’ll launch a drive to put his proposal up for a statewide vote.
