NANTUCKET, Mass. (AP) - Federal officials say a new voluntary vessel speed restriction zone will be in place off of Nantucket until mid-June to protect endangered right whales in the area.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says it is asking boaters to slow down in an area 35 miles east-southeast of Nantucket until June 13. Mariners in the area are asked to route around it entirely or proceed through it at 10 knots or less.

NOAA says three North Atlantic right whales were sighted in the area on May 28. The critically endangered animals’ total population is approximately 500.
