PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) - Authorities in one county in the Detroit area are handing out 3,000 free trigger locks as they mark Gun Safety Awareness Day.

The Detroit News (https://bit.ly/1GjOcR3 ) reports the gun locks are being made available at 30 law enforcement agencies in Oakland County beginning Friday. Auburn Hills Police Chief Doreen Olko says the free locks are “very popular,” and that 2,000 were given out last year in the county.

Bill Brassard of the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Project ChildSafe organization says that hiding guns isn’t “safe storage.” He says firearm owners should use safety devices such as gun locks or safes when storing firearms.

Republican state Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker of Lawton says she plans to introduce a bill Wednesday that would make gun safety devices exempt from Michigan sales and use taxes.
