DETROIT (AP) - Police say a 14-year-old girl is dead and a 15-year-old girl was critically injured after they were struck by a van on Detroit’s northwest side.

They were hit Tuesday evening while crossing a street. Police say they were taken to a hospital, where the 14-year-old was pronounced dead.

Both girls attended Henry Ford High School, which is part of the Education Achievement Authority. The district says counselors will be at school. MLive.com reports students were tying yellow ribbons around trees at the school to show support for the girls and their families.

School spokesman Mario Morrow says the girls were at school cheerleading tryouts before they were struck. Police say the van’s driver stopped and was cooperating with investigators.
