FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Democratic House Speaker Greg Stumbo says the Mountain Parkway should be extended into West Virginia.

Stumbo wrote a letter to the Kentucky and West Virginia congressional delegations and the governors of both states. He said Kentucky and West Virginia share a vibrant workforce and a highway connecting the areas would unlock the region’s potential.

Kentucky lawmakers have approved a 10-year, $753 million project to widen a 46-mile stretch of the parkway that when completed, would create a 400-mile stretch of four-lane highway between Paducah and Pikeville.

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear applauded Stumbo’s idea but said it would likely only happen if the legislature passes a law allowing private companies to partner with the government on transportation projects. Previous efforts with similar bills have failed to pass.
