BETTENDORF, Iowa (AP) - Police say an eastern Iowa teenager accused of fatally stabbing his 34-year-old brother told investigators that he thought his sibling was about to attack their mother.

A criminal complaint filed by Bettendorf police has provided new details about Saturday’s slaying. The 15-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder, and prosecutors want to try him as a youthful offender in adult court. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of crimes, so the AP is not using the teen’s name or his brother’s.

The complaint says the boy told officers he’d overheard his brother arguing with their mother, which he said enraged him because his brother frequently caused family disturbances.

The boy told officers he walked up behind his brother and, without warning, stabbed him at least two times.
