THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Thibodaux City Council members could face term limits if a proposal goes to voters next year and is approved.

The Daily Comet reports (https://bit.ly/1SVJmNi) Councilman Eric Tabor introduced an ordinance at Tuesday’s council meeting to amend the city’s Home Rule Charter to limit council members to three consecutive four-year terms.

Imposing term limits was a hallmark of the 2010 mayoral campaign for Tommy Eschete, who argued term limits would allow more people to engage in public service and introduce fresh ideas into a stagnant system.

The next year voters approved an amendment instituting term limits for the mayor’s seat with 79 percent approval.

If Tabor’s proposal is approved at their next meeting on June 16, the measure will go before voters during the March 16 election.
