REINBECK, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa city utility manager and most members of the utility’s board have been dismissed following a three-day telephone outage.

Mayor Tim Johnson says the Reinbeck City Council took the action on May 15, the day the outage ended for about 400 customers of Reinbeck Telecommunications Utility. The municipal utility provides digital cable, Internet and telephone services to Reinbeck, a city of about 1,700 people in Grundy County.

Board member Dan Smoldt was among those removed, but he subsequently was reinstated as board chairman. He has said the outage resulted from a hardware issue that was compounded by software problems.

Smoldt says the utility has hired consultants to review how the utility does business and says the utility will explore up-to-date technologies and cost-saving measures.
