WACHAPREAGUE, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say an ambulance driver has been charged with failing to obey a traffic signal in an accident that killed a man being transported.

State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya says 38-year-old Peter Surran of Exmore was charged Tuesday.

Anaya says Surran was driving a Bloxom volunteer fire ambulance through an intersection with its lights and sirens activated when it hit a transit bus. The ambulance lost control and overturned several times Monday in Accomack County.

A man being transported by the ambulance, 60-year-old Douglas R. McCready of Parksley, died at the scene.

Surran and two other squad members suffered injuries that weren’t life threatening. The bus driver wasn’t injured and no one else was on the bus.
