ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Several state lawmakers are among the dozens of people arrested after they staged a demonstration at the State Capitol to push for stronger rent control laws.

State police say they arrested 55 people Wednesday afternoon for blocking access to the governor’s second-floor office. Troopers say three Assembly members, three senators and three New York City Council members were among those charged with disorderly conduct.

The protest was held to push Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Legislature to strengthen the law governing the rent rules in and around New York City. The current law expires June 15.

Everyone arrested is from the New York City area. All were issued appearance tickets for Albany City Court.
