IRVING, Texas (AP) - The Conference USA board of directors is expecting a comprehensive plan by the fall on UAB’s efforts to reinstate football.

The board held a conference call Thursday to discuss UAB’s membership. It took no action on UAB’s status.

UAB President Ray Watts announced on Monday that he planned to reinstate football six months after dropping the program and two others citing the expense.

Football could return as soon as 2016.

C-USA said in a statement Thursday that board members expect the “plan addressing the key element of UAB’s football program going forward” at their fall meeting.

UAB supporters pledged $17 million to help cover the operational costs from football over the next five years. The league requires its members to field football teams, which had left UAB’s status in jeopardy.
