SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Criticism of lawmakers by a top aide of Gov. Bruce Rauner led to a scorching exchange on the Illinois House floor.

Richard Goldberg is deputy chief of staff to the Republican governor. He called a legislative hearing over Rauner paying his education secretary out of human services funds a “sham.”

He says previous governors routinely paid contractors through different agencies.

Later on the House floor, deputy Democratic Leader Lou Lang of Skokie called Goldberg’s answers “insulting” and evasive.

That prompted Republican Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove to object to Lang’s political “harangue.”

The Chicago Sun-Times reported May 27 the school czar is on the payroll of the Department of Human Services. Rauner announced human service-spending cuts to offset a budget deficit Democrats approved but Rauner says he rejects.
