MACON, Ga. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Justice says it has settled a lawsuit with a large hospital operator and a hospital accused of filing fraudulent Medicaid and Medicare claims.

A DOJ news release on Thursday said the agency settled the False Claims Act lawsuit against Health Management Associates and Clearview Regional Medical Center for $595,155.

The state of Georgia also was party to the settlement and will receive $396,770.

The whistleblower lawsuit alleged that the hospital paid kickbacks to an obstetric clinic that primarily served women living in the country without legal authorization in return for referring those patients to the hospital for labor and delivery.

Clearview, in Monroe, was previously called Walton Regional Medical Center was owned by Health Management Associates, which was purchased by Community Health Systems last year.
