AMESBURY, Mass. (AP) - The police chief in Amesbury says a former town officer is charged with repeatedly raping a child and possessing child pornography.

Police Chief Kevin Ouellet announced on Thursday that 62-year-old David Connor was set to be arraigned later in the day at Newburyport District Court on charges including aggravated rape and abuse of a child and possessing child pornography.

Ouellet called the allegations “horrific.” He said Connor is accused of sexually assaulting a girl multiple times over a period of several years, beginning when she was just 4 years old.

Connor was an Amesbury officer from 1977 to 1991, when he left with the rank of sergeant. A message seeking comment was left at a phone listing for Connor. It wasn’t immediately clear if he has a lawyer.
