BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - John Jones III has been named the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s vice president for Student Affairs.

Eric Jack, dean of the UAB Collat School of Business, made the announcement in a statement Thursday, following a national search guided by a 15-member committee that included students, faculty and staff.

Jack says Jones will lead collaborative efforts to improve the quality of life for students.

Jones holds a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Iowa. In 2013, he joined the University of North Carolina-Pembroke as vice chancellor for Student Affairs.

Before that, Jones worked in college administration at Purdue University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Northern Illinois University.

Jones’ first day at UAB will be July 15.
