MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama legislators have elevated the queen honey bee to the official agricultural insect of the state.

Senators gave final passage Thursday to the bill honoring the bee.

The agriculture distinction is needed, because the state already has an official state insect, the monarch butterfly.

Legislators earlier in the session made the brown shrimp the official state crustacean. Another bill sought to make a lance cake the official state cake.

Alabama has a long list of official state emblems including an official state tree, fruit, reptile, spirit and barbecue championship.
