HELENA, Mont. (AP) - A federal jury has convicted a Poplar man of raping a woman at a house party in 2010.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Brandon Ray Buckles faces up to life in prison and $500,000 in fines for sexually assaulting a woman on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation and lying to federal agents about it.

The victim and her boyfriend were drunk and asleep in her bedroom after a get-together in June 2010.

Prosecutors say Buckles entered the room, removed the woman’s pants and raped her. She woke up but could not fight him off. Her boyfriend was highly intoxicated and unconscious.

Court records show a rape test matched Buckles’ DNA.

Buckles denied touching the victim and his attorney contended the medical testimony was invalid.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 8.
